Song: “Be thou my vision ”

We continue this new series (“The church that hopes”) in 1 Thessalonians and this opening song brings our focus to God right at the start. An interesting line in the chapter we are looking at today is “We are not trying to please people but God” (ch2v4)…our temptation can be to please ourselves or others. We often do things or don’t do things out of ‘people pleasing’ or ‘fear of displeasing’. That did not seem to be what characterised this young Thessalonian church.

Interview with Craig Dyer (Christianity Explored)

Colin Adams spoke with Craig Dyer during the week to get his perspective on using Christianity Explored Online. Here is Part 2.

Please take time to pray for the opportunity to share Jesus and his life, claims and death and all it means, through the online course. Pray for courage and faith in inviting and for positive responses. Pray for the team that will be leading and organising. You can find out more about the course here.

Song: “Praise unbroken, praise unending (Unbroken praise)”

This song encourages us to serve as an expression of our praise and worship ‘So let my deeds outrun my words, and let my life outweigh my songs’.

Bible reading 1 Thessalonians 2:1-16 (Jim Gamble)

Sermon: “An authentic ministry” (Andy Hunter)

2 closing songs: “This life I live” picks up on 2v12 where Paul tells his friends in the church to ‘…live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.’ This song reminds us that God ‘has the right to rule my life, who calls you into his kingdom and glory’ and that we ‘died to sin upon the cross’ and we are ‘bound to Jesus in his death’.

and ‘”Before the throne of God above” we are reminded as we sing that Jesus is for us, on our side, ‘living and pleading’ our case and we have access to God our Father, because of all that Jesus is and done for us.
