Welcome, Announcements and Prayer (Andy Macdonald)

Song: “You have called us out of darkest night”

We start this new series (“the church that hopes”) in 1 Thessalonians and so we want to remind ourselves of the great message of the gospel that came to the Thessalonians but also to us. It’s a message that transformed them into people of praise and thanksgiving, being faithful in labouring and loving others. It also encouraged them to be a people who took the message to others of the true and living God who rescues. This opening song helps us with some of these things.

Song “Come thou fount”

Let’s continue to sing of God’s faithful work in us, rescuing us and reminding us of the ever present danger of idols. The Thessalonians were encouraged by Paul as people who were seeking to be faithful and turn from idols themselves. Let’s encourage ourselves too as we sing.

Slice of life: with Andrea Smith (Lebanon)

Please take time to pray for Andrea, the people of Lebanon and the things she has shared with us.

The following songs encourage us in our proclamation and evangelism. As we consider the Online Christianity Explore course available to share with others, we want to hold out “Jesus, the hope of the nations”. But also we want to remind ourselves that it is an endeavour that is dependent upon God. So we pray. “Your glorious cause, O God (Let your kingdom come)” is a prayer we can sing together.

Bible reading 1 Thessalonians 1

Sermon: “An authentic church” (Colin Adams)

2 closing songs: “When I fear my faith will fail (He will hold me fast)” followed by another opportunity to sing the song we introduced last week “Up to the hill of calvary (Hallelujah for the cross)”. There is much to celebrate about God’s amazing rescue and this song helps us do that.
