At this crucial stage in the story, Colin Adams highlights what is at stake. It is not just the lives of Esther and her people. It is God’s plan and promises, which are grounded on the Jewish race, through which Jesus must come.
But Esther’s clever management means that whatever she asks will be hard to refuse. However, she presents her case to the King with respect for his authority. Then, she starts with the personal touch – it is his queen’s life that is at stake! Only then, does she mention the plight of her people. The king naturally asks: “Who would dare!?” and the reply comes back “This evil Haman”. Retribution swiftly follows.
The suddenness of the judgement strikes us. But are we ready?
