Meet the Resistance – Esther Ch 2

In this second chapter we are introduced to the Resistance: two apparently weak individuals in face of the powerful Persian Empire.  Colin Adams brings out two major points from the story.

First, they live under an iron fist.  They are Jewish, from the tribe of Benjamin, as was Saul, the first king of Israel.  They are living in a pagan foreign land.  This was evidently a dangerous place for a Jew to be as they keep quiet about it.  The question is: “Which God will they serve?”.

Second, they are guided by a hidden hand, which is more powerful than the Persian Empire.  Esther, a Jewish orphan, is elevated to be Queen of Persia.  Because of her position, her cousin Mordecai, who adopted her, now has a direct line to Xerxes.  He is, therefore, able to get a warning to the king to defeat an assassination plot.  As a result, Mordecai’s name is now recorded as a benefactor to the state.  That has important consequences later in the story.
