Encourage one another

Encourage one another

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:24-25

A hugely helpful way to keep encouraging us as believers is to have someone else take an interest in our lives and ministries.  Going and making (grow1) disciples (Matt 28v20) is a ministry all disciples are called to be engaged in. We might not think we are involved in ‘ministry’, but ministry is simply serving the Lord as we serve others. It includes taking steps towards others and being interested in what’s going on in their world. Whether we’re serving tea and coffee, helping in Sunday School, or sitting encouraging and praying with someone in a coffee shop, all the service we do aims to help others grow to become like Jesus.

One2Ones is one way to get closer to a fellow believer and share together in what is going on in life and ministry. It might feel challenging to be asked personal questions such as ‘what are you reading in the Bible just now?’, ‘what are you praying for?’ or ‘how are you finding church these days?’ But without questions like these, our spiritual lives can dry up, go off down wrong paths, or we can become weary with it all.

We want to encourage the church family to engage in a One2One this autumn. Could you make room for at least 4 meetups over an 8 -10 week period?  (You can do more if you like!). Consider someone from your Community Group perhaps. Maybe someone from a different generation/life stage to you or maybe even your spouse. Be open to someone asking you, as well as being bold to ask someone yourself2

We’ve written before about how to go about getting involved in One2Ones (check out this previous article ‘Going small to grow big by Laura Porteous and Colin Adams3) and we also recorded a 20min chat (‘A one to what?’ with Andy Hunter and Colin Adams) that you can listen to.

As you meet in One2Ones, let us encourage you to

  • Be open and share (burdens, struggles, pain, hopes, joys, temptations)
  • Point each other to Jesus and his Word – connect Scripture to each other’s lives and ministries and pray for each other in the burdens, struggles, pains, hopes, joys, temptations…
  • Pray that the Lord will help you as you talk together, asking, listening and that his Spirit will lead you both towards Christ and Christlikeness.
  • Be intentional as you move towards each other (even in the practical steps of working out diary dates, take notes and committing to pray)
  • Consider taking an opportunity to ‘do life’ together (share a meal, go on a walk, hang out one evening/watch a movie/play a board game, play sport, make cakes, knit…)

What resources are there to help us?

It can be daunting to just meet someone without something to guide and talk around/or about. We have pulled together a list of some options on resources to use

“I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.”
